Headlines and Miracles

Suicide bomber kills 12….

50 die in sectarian violence….

Marauding gangs rape and kill….

On and on and on and on….

All taken from the news – real headlines.

Depressing, scary and quickly forgotten as the next horror hits the news, and then is forgotten again and again and again….

And then…

33 trapped miners stop the madness and inspire the world.

I was mesmerized. Obsessed.

I watched it all – every one of them coming out of that capsule.

I had tears in my eyes and cheered for the sheer joy of it.

And it only got better.

They had grace, belief and respect for each other and their rescuers, fought over who would be last – not first.

We talk about team…and wonder how people sitting next to each other in offices or in companies that are affiliated or in groups that have connections can work better together – respect each other more and in general be more cohesive….

I’m humbled – don’t know about you.

And yes – in our cynical and quick, on-to-the-next-thing world the story is already old. But for one shining moment it broke through, grabbed us, made us think and react spontaneously, cry for the good, believe.

33 men who could have been left for dead – lived because of the human spirit.

Listen:

“There are only two forces in the world, the sword and the spirit. In the long run the sword will always be conquered by the spirit.” Napoleon Bonaparte

Maybe this time it was only for a moment…but in the long run…

I vote for the spirit.

What’s your vote?
